Find a daily rent, then multiply it by the number of days before your first full period. With weekly rent, the usual daily figure is the weekly rent divided by 7. With monthly rent, a common approach is the yearly rent divided by 365.
Your agreement and the rules where the property is decide what you actually pay. Knowing the arithmetic lets you read the first invoice calmly and ask the right question if a figure looks different.
Who this is for
Rent is paid in fixed periods: a week, a fortnight or a calendar month. Moving in rarely lines up with the start of one. If you get the keys on a Thursday and rent is due every Monday, there are four days before your first full week. The arithmetic below estimates that part period; your agreement and local rules determine the charge.
Agents and landlords handle those days in different ways. Some ask for them as a separate first payment, others add them to the first full period. Either way, the figure should show which days it covers and how the daily rent was worked out.

Illustrative only: Priya moves into a flat on Thursday 1 October 2026. Rent is 550 per week, due every Monday. She counts four days before Monday 5 October and uses weekly rent divided by 7, so her part-week rent is 314.29. From 5 October she pays 550 each week, and she adds the first payment to her move-in budget next to the security deposit and moving costs.
Weekly rent divided by 7 is the simplest method when rent is quoted per week or per fortnight. Weekly rent of 550 gives a daily rent of 78.57, so four days come to 314.29.
Yearly rent divided by 365 suits rent quoted per month. Multiply the monthly rent by 12, then divide by 365.
Some agreements divide the monthly rent by the number of days in the month you move in. February makes the biggest difference between this method and the yearly one, so ask which method your agreement uses. These are arithmetic options; confirm the method required by your agreement and applicable local rules.
Count from your move-in date up to the day before your first full rent period starts. Moving in on Thursday 1 October 2026 with rent due on Monday 5 October means you count 1, 2, 3 and 4 October: four days.
If your first full period starts on the same day you move in, there is no part-period rent at all. If the gap is longer than one rent period, check the start date on your agreement before you work anything out.
Part-period rent covers days you live in the property before the first full period. Rent in advance is money paid ahead of a period, and its limits are set where the property is.
This calculator does not provide a verified rent-in-advance limit for this market. Check the official tenant guidance for the state and locality where the property is before you pay ahead.
The first rent payment sits next to the security deposit, moving costs and connections in your move-in budget. RentFiles keeps your application details, documents and cover letter in one place, and you only pay $19.99 if you export the finished PDF.
It means rent for part of a rent period, worked out from a daily rent and the number of days.
The calculator offers named arithmetic methods. Confirm which method your agreement and applicable local rules require.
Dividing by 30 treats every month as the same length. Yearly rent divided by 365 spreads the rent evenly across the year, while dividing by the days in the actual month follows the calendar.
